Request a Care Needs Assessment
If you are struggling with daily tasks such as washing, dressing, cooking, or keeping your home safe, you can request a free care needs assessment from your local council.
A social care professional will discuss your needs and determine what support may help you, such as:
- Home care services
- Equipment or home adaptations
- Day services or community support
- Residential care options
You are entitled to an assessment regardless of income or savings.

Carer's Assessment (Support for Family Carers)
If someone regularly cares for you, they are entitled to a Carer's Assessment through the local authority.
This assessment looks at:
- The carer's wellbeing
- Support they may need
- Respite or practical assistance
Attendance Allowance (Financial Support for Care Needs)
Attendance Allowance is a tax-free benefit for people over State Pension age who need help because of illness or disability.
Weekly rates (2025–2026):
- £73.90 – if you need help during the day or night
- £110.40 – if you need help during both day and night
The money can be used for anything that helps you remain independent, such as:
- Paying for care services
- Transport
- Household help
Provided by the Department of Work and Pensions.
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
If you are under State Pension age and have a long-term illness, disability, or mental health condition, you may be eligible for Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
PIP helps with extra living costs such as:
- Mobility support
- Personal care needs
- Assistive equipment
Winter Fuel Payment
The Winter Fuel Payment helps older people pay heating costs during winter.
Payments are typically:
- £200 per household
- £300 if someone in the household is over 80
Eligibility for winter 2025/26 includes:
- Born on or before 21 September 1959
- Living in England or Wales
Warm Home Discount Scheme
The Warm Home Discount provides £150 off your electricity bill during winter.
It is usually applied automatically if you receive:
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Housing Benefit
Blue Badge Scheme (Disabled Parking)
If you have mobility issues or disabilities, you may qualify for a Blue Badge.
This allows you to:
- Park closer to shops and services
- Use disabled parking spaces
- Get parking concessions
Disabled Facilities Grant (Home Adaptations)
Your local council may provide funding to make your home safer and easier to live in.
Examples include:
- Stair lifts
- Walk-in showers
- Ramps or widened doors
- Accessible bathrooms
Mental Health Support Services
If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, or emotional distress, help is available. You can access free mental health support through the NHS, including talking therapies.

Citizens Advice (Benefits and Legal Support)
Citizens Advice provides free confidential advice on:
- Benefits

Free or Discounted TV Licence
You may be eligible for a free or discounted TV licence if you:
- Are 75 or older and receive Pension Credit
- Are registered blind or severely sight impaired
- Live in certain supported housing
Community Support & Local Activities
Local councils and charities offer services to reduce isolation and improve wellbeing, including:
- Community transport
- Social groups
- Lunch clubs
- Exercise classes
- Volunteering opportunities
These services can support physical health, mental wellbeing, and social connection.
